Virtual Debate Competition held on “The New Farm Bills 2020” under Monthly Virtual Speakathon by T&P Cell

Speakathon Club under the mentorship of Training and Placement cell of Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar organized an online Debate Competition on the topic “The New Farm Bills 2020” under its Monthly Virtual Speakathon program. Thirty three students participated in the competition.

Introducing the event, Dr. Aditya Vir Singh, Assistant Director of Training and Placement Cell greeted all the participants and encouraged the students to do more and more participation in such types of programs for enhancing their communication skills.
Participating students speaking in favour of the motion argued that these new bills will lead to a second green revolution. The Farmers will now have a choice to sell their produce to anyone and anywhere without being solely dependent on APMC. These bills will abolish at least some levels of intermediaries between farmers and buyers. This will ensure that the farmer gets a bigger share of the price paid by the consumer and will, therefore, improve agricultural incomes.
While the students against the motion highlighted that these bills would lead to the corporatization of agriculture, with the market, along with the monsoon, becoming an unpredictable determinant of the destiny of farmers. Farmers will be at the mercy of big corporations during dealings. If at all MSP is abolished, farmers will be of nowhere. Doubts are still there how the government will be able to intervene in case farmers get cheated by private buyers.
While declaring the results, Mr. Pratap Singh Malik, Director T&P cell, appreciated the efforts of all participants and appealed to the students to develop the habit of reading editorials in multiple newspapers to get detailed information about current issues. Nivedita Dhankhar from B.Tech stood first while Inderjeet from MBA stood second, third position was bagged by Aarzoo of B.Sc (Economics), Shally from MBA and Rashmi from B.Sc Mathematics stood fourth and fifth respectively. All participants have been awarded digital certificates.
Core Club member students Tushar Narwal, Devanshi Grover & Nitya Chugh acted as judges. The Vote of thanks was presented by Speakathon Club Coordinator Apurva Mann. Unnati anchored the entire program.
