Tata Steel Tomorrow Lab (Idea Track): Stages and Timelines

Round 1 – PLAN

Registered teams need to select any number of themes of their choice out of the 11 themes to work upon and submit their business idea/ proposal with a maximum of 7 slides (excluding cover slides & annexures). The maximum file size can be 15 MB.

  • Start Date: 16 Nov 22, 10:00 AM IST
  • End Date: 11 Dec 22, 11:59 PM IST

 Round 2 – PITCH

The 20 shortlisted teams will have to expand on their ideas and build a comprehensive and nuanced strategy with the implementation roadmap. Deliverables include sharing a presentation (of up to 10 slides) along with supporting multimedia/prototypes, if any.

  • End Date: 10 Jan 23, 11:59 PM IST
Round 3 – PERFORM (National Finale)

5 Shortlisted teams will move to the National Finals with an opportunity to present their ideas to the Senior Leadership team of Tata Steel.

Eligibility Criteria & Team Formulation:
  • Tomorrow Lab 2022 (Idea Track) is open to all students pursuing B.Tech, M.Tech and MBA irrespective of their specialization and year of study.
  • Students of 1-year full-time MBA (PGPX) programs are also eligible to participate.
  • Participants should be active full-time students.
  • All participating teams should consist of 3 members.
  • Each member has to register with their valid college email ID.
  • All the team members must be from the same institute/campus.
  • Cross-specialization and cross-year teams are allowed.
  • One person cannot be a member of more than one team
  • Any deviation from the above-mentioned guidelines will result in the immediate disqualification of the entire team.
Competition Structure:

Round 1—PLAN
  • Registered teams need to select a theme (multiple themes can be selected, worked upon and submitted in separate files) out of the 11 problem statements.
  • Teams have to identify whitespace, need gap, customer pain points, market size, value proposition, and business potential (min ₹1,000 Cr at 20-30% market share) for any of the following theme(s):
  1. Smart City Solutions
  2. Rural Storage Solutions
  3. Waste to wealth
  4. Sustainable packaging
  5. Last mile solutions
  6. Rural Ease of Farming Solutions
  7. Water management
  8. Assisted in handling manual loads in rural India
  9. Rural waste management 
  10. Application of solar /renewable energy in rural India
  11. Road Safety Solutions
  • Teams need to identify risks associated with business while tackling their submission.
  • Teams need to develop a business case around the selected theme(s) by following the Business Model Canvas shared. This can be accessed post-registration from the round active on the competition page.
  • Teams have to submit a PPT with up to 7 slides of their BIG Idea, excluding a cover slide containing team details. Annexures, if desired, can be added in addition to these 8 slides.
  • It is mandatory to have Business Model Canvas on the 1st slide. The rest of the slides can contain the Inputs/ Insights generated for business and other details mentioned above.
  • Deck submissions can be uploaded only in .ppt/.pptx/.pdf format and with a maximum file size of 15 MB. 
  • Teams selecting multiple themes need to zip their submissions in one folder and upload the zip file.
  • Please submit your files in this naming convention— Leader's First Name_Team Name_Institute Name
  • Teams can change their submissions any time before the submission deadline. Do make your submissions well before the deadline to avoid any last-minute hassles.
Round 2—PITCH 
  • Basis Round 1 submissions, top 20 teams would be shortlisted for Round 2.
  • The shortlisted teams will upload their detailed submissions, containing a cover slide and 10 main slides for analysis and solution. In addition to these 10 slides, there can be annexures and any other supporting details. 
  • More details would be shared with the shortlisted teams in due course of time.

Round 3—PERFORM (National Finale)
  • Top 5 teams will be shortlisted for Round 3- National Finale.
  • National Finalist teams will get the opportunity to present their ideas to the Senior Leadership of Tata Steel.
  • Further details will be shared with the finalist teams in due course of time.
Evaluation Criteria:
  • Team submission ideas for Tomorrow Lab (Idea Track) will be evaluated on the below parameter:
  1. Feasibility
  2. Scalability
  3. Uniqueness of solution/Innovation Quotient
  4. Impact/Gravity of the problem solved through the solution
  5. Long-term differentiating factor/ Entry barriers
Rewards and Recognition:

Winners - Cash prize of ₹1,00,000
Runners Up - Cash prize of ₹50,000
Certificate of Achievement for the National Finalist teams 
Tata Steel Mementos for the National Finalist teams

Terms and Conditions:

Participants are required to make note of the following Terms & Conditions before registering for the event—
  • The idea can be used by the company basis feasibility and ease of implementation. 
  • All decisions in matters of eligibility, authenticity & final judgments will be with Tata Steel.
  • The format, structure & timelines of events are subject to change before the actual beginning of the event.
  • If a team fails to submit an entry before the timeline, Tata Steel holds the right to disqualify the team from the competition.
  • Any deviation from the above-mentioned points will result in the immediate disqualification of the entire team.
